The Greatest of These: A Study of 1 Corinthians 12-13
The Greatest of These: A Study of 1 Corinthians 12-13
Many Christians view 1 Corinthians 13 as the “Love Chapter,” a poetic definition of love, to be read at weddings, but not much more beyond that. These chapters are beautiful and inspiring on their own, but reading them together provides a clearer picture of the chapters’ deeper meanings.
The beginning of chapter 12 speaks about the presence of “different gifts, but the same spirit” that distributes each spiritual discipline (v. 4). The chapter uses the analogy of the body of Christ and how “Just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ” (v. 12). We should not put down others for their gifts or think our own gift is inferior.
After his explanation, Paul instructs that we should “desire the greater gifts. And I will show you an even better way.” (v. 31) With this background of spiritual gifts and the body of Christ, Paul starts chapter 13, saying, “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal” (v. 1). He uses similar comparisons to other spiritual gifts like prophecy and knowledge, saying unlike these, love never ends (v. 8). Even though he has built up the importance of spiritual gifts, he places love even higher, so these gifts are worth nothing if used without love. Out of faith, hope, and love, he places love as the greatest (v. 13).
Many Christians understand the ideas of spiritual gifts, the body of Christ, and the power of love, but not Paul’s clear connection between them. Everyone in the body of Christ has an important role, like through unique spiritual gifts, but without love, these spiritual gifts are worth nothing, and the body of Christ falls apart.
Just like a character in a book or movie, this is your story, not your fellow Christians, who have their own unique gifts and story. You have a special gift to give the world if you could only learn how to use it in love. If you understand what Paul is talking about in 1 Corinthians 12-13, you will be able to use whatever gift the Spirit has given you to build up the body of Christ.
Please read through the chapter by yourself to further understand these points.
